The speed at which technology is progressing seems to be increasing, especially on the software front. New technologies are constantly emerging which is having a progressively bigger impact on the modern technology based business, primarily web businesses.
Lets say you start out developing a web based application that will be core to your business and you choose a specific technology set to develop your web application on, no doubt you will choose the best and newest technologies available at the time and will invest all your time and money into it.
You have spent a lot of time and money developing your product which is now complete and you have an industry leading product that is attracting a raft of new customers... but it wont be long before a new start-up comes along and their newer product, which offers similar functionality, is developed around a newer, more flexible and more interoperable technology.
You are now behind the curve and have lost much of your competitive advantage.. what do you do? You can either rewrite your application on the latest technology and keep this unsustainable cycle or you can continue to make the most of what you have.
Update - Apparently the solution is Micro Services.. replacing the monolithic software entity with single purposed services is the way forward....
